People like us
I don't know exactly what makes us a magnet for strange people and experiences. It's been happening ever since the mister and I have been together. He seems to have a whole menagerie of strange people in his back pocket. But together we seem to bring them out as well. Anyway, on July 3, our yard guy, who is not a particularly good yard guy, rang the doorbell at 9:15 at night to ask if he and his wife and son could come over on the 4th to swim in our pool. I thought for sure he was here to ask for money since he had been working in the yard a lot the day before. Nope, turns out that he just wanted to have a happy fourth of July hanging out at our house with us, the kids, and my mom. He speaks some English, although he's difficult to understand, and we can't understand his Spanish, even though we both know and speak enough that we should be able to communicate with him pretty well. His wife speaks no English. On the 4th he called right at 12:30, just as our kids went down for naps, to see if he could come over then. Bad timing. The mister told them so.
Anyway, we try to be nice to them. I've given them a bunch of baby stuff that the monkey used. But we're not actually friends. We can be friendly, but we're not friends.
On the one hand it's nice that they felt comfortable asking, but on the other hand, it was really strange that they asked. And it would have been a really, really awkward encounter had they actually come over to swim.
