With the news being so easily available online, do you find yourself purchasing less newspapers and magazines?
Yes. No newspapers.
No. Still buy magazines.
Did you go to summer camp? What is your favorite memory/story? If you didn't go to camp, do you feel like you missed out?
Submitted by chris.
Not real camp. Cheerleading camp. How's that. It was horrible. The summer before 8th grade. I roomed with Kathy McGinley. I wonder where she is now. (The closest thing to a funny story about it was that when we found out who we were rooming with we were both in our room crying about it. I wanted to room with M and she wanted to room with E and for some reason both M and E roomed with their better friends and not us. So Kathy and I were stuck with each other. Crying about it together. That's kind of funny, right?)
It was at USF. We stayed in the dorms. We were not a very good squad. I was one of the few who could do a split. The whole point of the camp was to learn some new cheers and win the Spirit Stick. I can't remember if we got one or not. Really, it was horrible.
I would also like to mention that one of my favorite 10,000 Maniacs songs of all time is "A Campfire Song" from In My Tribe. In fact, I wanna listen to it right now.
A new pill claims that it can eliminate the need to exercise. If that were true, would you take it and throw your running shoes away for good?
I need to buy new running shoes in the first place. All I wear anymore is Birkenstocks. And even my newest pair is stinky. My feet are so wide now (they always were, but even more now after two babies) I can't stand the thought of shoving them into sneakers.
What do you think about airlines charging for your second bag? Will this change the way you pack?
Better question...how will I ever travel with two kids?
Even better question...will I ever enjoy a plane trip again?
What fashion trend do you wish would come back into style?
Mini skirts. Oh wait, they already have.
Leg warmers. Oh wait, they already have.
Lip gloss. Oh wait, it already has.
Big ugly sunglasses. Oh wait, they already have.
Dr. Scholl's. Oh wait, they already have.
gauchos, platform stripper shoes, seersucker, Izod alligator shirts, flip flops, half-shirts, scarves, big hoop earrings, big, little, and small purses, nose rings, tattoos, on and on and on...
how about pom pom socks? oh wait, the wonderful people at AA have already brought those back too...
Oh and they've also brought back the awesome striped knee sock. God bless them. Now my sons will be able to grow up in a world where women have wonderful hosiery choices. They won't have to miss out. They won't have to rely on my boring stories about the good old days.
What are you most looking forward to in August?
Visit from my in-laws so that the mister and I can go out to dinner one night.
Oh, and our 11 year anniversary.
Oh, and I turn 35, but I'm not really all that excited about that.
If you were in control of your country's budget, how would you allocate the money?
I would figure out how to undo the insane cycle of dependence and insanity that is funding the corn farmers in this country. The Omnivore's Dilemma is laying out for me how our government subsidizes American farmers to the gills. And they're still barely making it. And the reason we're paying them to produce corn (even when they lose money on it, and even though there is an overabundance of it) has to do with large industry and petroleum. I can't sum it all up, but I will tell you that Michael Pollan is making a compelling case about how f'ed up our food industry is and right now it's got a lot to do with our government's intervention in farming and with corn in specific.
Besides that I would quit funding the military and the military industrial complex. End the war.
Has the unfriendly economy caused you to change your spending habits?
Yes and no. Having a new baby has caused me to drive less. So that's good. I don't leave the house much and when I do leave it's not very far.
I have now started looking for coupons for groceries. Part of it is because of the economy. Part of it is for the challenge. I hate giving Albertson's so much money every time I walk in the door.
Walkscore.com recently ranked America's most walkable neighborhoods and cities. Where does your hometown land in the rankings? And how much do you actually find yourself walking instead of driving?
49 out of 100. Not very walkable. Las Vegas is too hot, the blocks are big and long, public transport is really about slow moving buses. I have occasionally walked to the corner Walgreen's. When it's not too hot we sometimes walk downtown to the First Friday art festivities, but it's been a while. We can walk to our local frozen custard stand, but again, when it's ball-out hot and you've got kids, the car is the better option.
We used to walk to some of these places in our pre-baby lives. Much less now. And none of them are really all that useful on a daily basis.
Do you ever read the "Acknowledgments" at the beginning or end of a book? Why or why not? Bonus points: What book contains your favorite acknowledgments?
Submitted by Strive2Be.
Yes, pretty much every time. I'm always interested to read the author in their own voice. Curious about who they care about.
I've been acknowledged in a book twice. Once in the regular acknowledgments, once a textbook was dedicated to me. I'm not telling.
